sir,
I have the honour to refer to my despatch No. 5
of the 19th January on the subject of the "8an Nam Hoi"
piracy case in which three British subjects were killed
and two seriously injured. It will be recollected
that suspicion attached to the Pukkai (Kongmoon)
Seamen's union, who were believed to have planned the
affair as an act of revenge.
2. I now enclose a copy of a naval report,
stating that thirty-eight members of the union have
been arrested by the military authorities and are in
custody. It has also been reported by the ofileer
commanding 4.M.S. Peterel at Kongmoon that five more of
the pirates were shot on the 21st January, making a total
of thirteen executed and six or seven killed whilet
attempting to escape from the ship.
3. The enclosed press extract may be of interest
as recording the local reaction to the affair in
Konggoon.
His Majesty's Minister,
Peking.
I have, etc.,
(Sgd) J.F.Brenan.
Acting Consul-General.
